Martin Hague

Manager for Clinical Skills and Patients as Educators at the University of Sheffield


Martin Hague founded the Patients as Educators Programme at the University of Sheffield in 2004. Since its introduction, the programme has grown from strength to strength and has generated national and international acclaim.

Martin Hague oversees the management of over 750 patients as educators with responsibility for the implementation of the PaE programme, ensuring that it feeds into the MBChB curriculum and complements the strategic plan of the unit of Medical Education.

Martin Hague also manages the clinical skills centre and the delivery of the clinical skills components of the curriculum, which are taught, learnt and assessed by colleagues across the faculty and region and with the associate teaching hospitals.

Martin Hague presents clinical skills and Patients as Educators workshops, nationally and internationally, and has had papers published in international journals.

Lindsey Vickers

Clinical Educator for Undergraduate Medicine

Lindsey Vickers is an experienced clinical educator with a rich background in acute care and a deep commitment to simulation-based learning. She began her career in neurosurgery critical care, where she developed a strong foundation in high-pressure clinical environments. She later served as a Stroke Sister, supporting patients through complex recovery journeys and coordinating multidisciplinary care.

Now working in Undergraduate Medical Education at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Lindsey brings her frontline expertise into the classroom and simulation suite. She is passionate about skills teaching and believes in the power of simulation to build confidence, competence, and clinical reasoning in future healthcare professionals.

As Joint Chair of the Yorkshire and Humber Clinical Skills and Simulation Network, Lindsey champions collaboration across the region, sharing best practices and fostering innovation in clinical education.




Caren Reid RSciTech

Clinical Skills and Simulation Technician at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS FT 

ASPiH Yorkshire & Humber Tech Champion


Caren is the  Clinical Skills and Simulation Technician at Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust. Caren has worked within this role since the development of the Simulation Suites across both sites in 2011, having previously worked within a number of roles in Medical Education and training. Caren has been a key influence in the inception and support of simulation within the trust  looking after both the technological and administration aspects of simulation training.

Caren is Registered Science Technician with the Science Council & ASPiH, she also holds NVQ/ Diploma level 3 Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Education Science), which she gained in 2015 and is hopeful to further her NVQ training in the near future.

Caren has a keen interest in moulage and is eager that her role on the operational group will be influential in advancing the role of the technician both regionally and nationally.

Caren is the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Tech Champion for ASPiH.


Ann Sunderland

Consultant in Clinical Skills and Simulation

ASPiH Exec Member 


Ann qualified as a registered nurse in 1986 and worked in general practice both as a practice nurse and later as a nurse practitioner. She became a senior lecturer at Leeds Beckett University in 2006, teaching into postrgraduate programmes and clinical skills modules. In 2011/12, she helped design the new clinical skills suite at the University and successfully completed an MMedSci in Medical Education, again focusing on clinical skills and simulation. She has had an active role within the simulation community since then, being selected as a regional simulation development officer for the Association of Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH)/Higher Education Academy (HEA) as well as working in collaboration with other organisations in relation to simulation-based education. In 2018, she left full time academia to set up her own business, Wynnefield Consulting as well as working freelance for a number or organisations. She is an ASPiH accredited educator and sits on the ASPiH Executive Committee and Accreditation Committee.


David Graham

Lecturer in Adult Nursing at the University of York


Prior to working at the University of York, David worked in critical care nursing, gaining experience in intensive care nursing, including specialist neuro and cardiac intensive care units.

David has an interest in innovative ways of teaching including high fidelity simulation and use of technology in teaching.

Stuart Barton

Technical Manager and Technical Radiation Protection Supervisor for the School of Healthcare at Sheffield Hallam University.


I oversee a team of technicians who support the clinical skills teaching and simulation for all our Nursing and AHP courses.

Prior to this I spent 23 years in the NHS as a Specialist Clinical Engineer responsible for the maintenance and management for a wide range of equipment and systems as well as supporting the Clinical Skills team at Chesterfield Royal with their equipment and infrastructure
